Why Algae is a Good Source of Omega-3

What Is Algae?

Algae are a diverse group of marine-based plants. There are around 40,000 species of algae, ranging from single-celled organisms to larger algae, such as seaweed.

Algae is also a natural source of Omega-3 fatty acids, supplying both EPA and DHA. Algae is in fact the reason why fatty and oily fish contain healthy fats. They can’t produce EPA and DHA naturally, but by eating microalgae fish become sources of Omega-3 themselves.

What Are the Benefits of Omega-3 Sourced from Algae?

Omega-3 is important for various processes in your body and has a range of health benefits ranging from supporting normal heart function to helping to maintain eye health and vision. DHA is proven to support brain function in adults*, alongside brain development in foetuses and children.

Our bodies cannot produce Omega-3 themselves naturally, which is why we must get our Omega-3 through diet or supplements which are derived from either fatty, oily fish, or algae. But what are the key benefits of using algae as a source of omega-3 over fish?

A Sustainable Choice

Algae can be seen as a more sustainable source of Omega-3 as it can be grown both quickly and easily on a large scale, and unlike fish, it can be relatively inexpensive to farm, requiring only sunlight, carbon dioxide, phosphorus, and nitrogen to grow.

At MINAMI®, we’re passionate and committed to safeguarding our environment, and all our fish oil is as sustainably sourced as possible. The fish we use are also certified by Friend of the Sea, a non-profit organisation that ensures that no endangered species are used within our Omega-3 supplements.

An Omega-3 Alternative for Fish Allergies

When it comes to food allergens, fish can be one of the most common, so it’s great to have an alternative source of Omega-3 from algae oil.

A Vegan Source of Omega-3

If you’re following a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle, or perhaps you just don’t enjoy eating oily fish, having an alternative, plant-based source of Omega-3 such as algae oil is ideal. Algae oil provides the same benefits as fish oil, but without comprising your values.

Our MINAMI® VeganDHA supplement is a plant-based Omega-3 supplement that contains high levels of DHA derived from algae.

With all the usual benefits of DHA, our MINAMI® VeganDHA is also safe to use when pregnant or breastfeeding – supporting normal eye and brain development in unborn children and breastfed infants.**

Our VeganDHA also contains astaxanthin, which is a carotenoid found in algae and has been recognised as one of the most powerful antioxidants in nature.
